Maya women artisans of Santiago Atitlán make MayaWorks fair trade beaded holiday ornaments. Santiago is a small indigenous village on the shores of beautiful Lake Atitlán which is actually a caldera formed in an eruption 84,000 years ago. The Maya on Lake Atitlán speak one of the 21 indigenous languages spoken in Guatemala today, Tzutujil. About 30 indigenous Guatemalan women create the hand-beaded jewelry, Christmas ornaments, and personal accessories of MayaWorks. In particular, the beaded Christmas ornaments are a great source of work for Maya artisans. They can bead the fair trade Christmas ornaments from home which allows them to take care of children and elderly family members.
