Indigenous women beaders of Santiago Atitlán craft MayaWorks fair trade mezuzzot. Santiago is a small indigenous village on the shores of beautiful Lake Atitlán in the highlands of Guatemala. The Maya there speak Tzutujil, one of the 21 indigenous languages spoken in Guatemala that derive from the ancient Mayan language. A visitor to Santiago Atitlan is overwhelmed by the friendliness of its people, the beauty of the volcano-ringed lake, the vibrant colors, and the quality of the artesania. Beading the handmade mezuzzot is excellent work for indigenous women who want to stay home to care for their children. They can work from home while earning an income to support their children's education.
